an arrangement to protect employees in the event of a shortage of work. Guaranteed employment requires the payment of a minimum wage for a maximum number of workless days or hours. In some cases, a worker may qualify for a legal right to a guaranteed payment. An employer cannot lay off workers without a term in the individual contract of employment. The right to do so usually lies in a collective agreement incorporated into the contract of employment.
